Please note earlier start time. Join local birders to gather long-term data on the presence of birds, their abundance, and changes in populations. Appropriate for birders of all skill levels, the walks traverse uneven terrain on forest and meadow trails and around the main house. Meet at the Welcome Center parking lot.
March Bird Note: Great Horned Owl. We’ve been keeping records at Hildene since 2007 and have recorded 167 species, but we have not yet seen or heard the soft hoo-h’HOO-hoo-hoo call of a Great Horned Owl. The bright, yellow eyes, prominent ear (feather) tufts and white bib are easy field marks on this large gray-brown bird. Owls are mostly nocturnal hunters, but in winter they may hunt during daylight hours. Mated pairs are monogamous and begin pair hooting just before egg-laying in late winter. The chicks will probably have hatched by March. Great Horned Owls are opportunistic hunters…
