Mitten Project
Help us knit more mittens!
Dear Red Fox Families and Friends,

As we near the winter solstice and the halfway point of our school year, we’re reminded of the warmth and light that our vibrant community provides. At this time of year, the story of The Mitten by Jan Brett feels especially fitting. In this timeless tale, a boy’s lost mitten becomes a haven for a growing group of animals seeking warmth. Though the mitten becomes full, “It was getting crowded, but everyone found a way to make room.” This powerful message resonates deeply with our Red Fox Community. Our school is a place where every individual brings something unique, and we find ways to make room for each contribution.

A special way we foster that connection is through time spent outdoors. Whether learning life skills in the garden, exploring Hawgolwood - our enchanting outdoor classroom and forest space - or simply embracing the joy of Vermont’s changing seasons, our students thrive in nature. Like the animals in The Mitten seeking shelter, our students find warmth in each other and their experiences outside.

At Red Fox Community School, we are committed to cultivating an environment where students grow academically, emotionally, and creatively, embracing the full spectrum of their potential. Each day, our students engage in rich academic learning, whether they’re classifying animals and exploring their habitats in science, analyzing data from outdoor observations in math, or creating final projects that reflect their understanding of a book’s themes or a character’s traits. They also learn to care for the world around them, plus develop skills like woodworking, cooking, and knitting—hands-on practices in creativity and perseverance that reflect our belief in nurturing their independence and resilience.

We’ve seen this spirit of belonging and confidence carry forward with our graduates. Last year’s graduating class, like those before them, transitioned successfully into middle school, carrying with them a love of learning and strong self-advocacy. We consistently hear from teachers and administrators that our students are compassionate, responsible learners who are self-directed, displaying strong academics, citizenship and contributions to co-curricular activities.

In this season of giving, we invite you to contribute to our school’s Annual Appeal. Your generosity allows us to continue providing the unique, experiential education that makes Red Fox so special—a place where community is intentional, inclusion is modeled, and every child has the chance to thrive. We have included a small piece of yarn to symbolize the fibers we all contribute to create something greater. Just like the animals in The Mitten found warmth and connection, we, too, are creating a “mitten” where each child’s gifts are nurtured.

Thank you for being part of this magic, this “mitten”. Your generosity and support are truly appreciated, and we look forward to all we will create together in the years ahead.

Warmly,
Karen
