Week of December 10th, 2018

“Dear Everyone,

The owls are going on a big trip tomorrow. They are going to the Bank of Bennington to learn about banks, to visit John O’Keefe, the town manager, to visit the police office and the fire department. We are thinking about what communities need and want. We decided that need means something that you can live without and want means something that you can live without.

The eagles are continuing their civil war research. Last week they visited Dellwood Cemetery. They found a general in the civil war, a member of the Calvary from the civil war and revolutionary war soldiers. They are learning place based history. They are excited to do more research tomorrow at the Pawlet Cemetery.

“We made owl town on Friday at school because were thinking about what the community needs. We made it out of blocks.”-JJ

“We have been practicing our poems. We spent a lot of time practicing. We each took turns doing our poem. We each have to have them memorized. I memorized it by practicing. My poem is called “The bear, the fire and the snow” by Shel Silverstein. It goes like this: I live in fear of the snow said the bear. Whenever it’s here be sure I’ll be there. Oh, the pain and the cold. When one’s bearish and old. I live in fear of the snow. I live in fear of the fire said the snow. Whenever it comes the it’s time I must go. With it’s yellow lick flames. Leaping higher and higher. I live in fear of the fire. There’s more but I will tell you later. To be continued…We worked hard on our poems.”-Rebecca

“I had poetry practice. It was fun.”-Mischa

“Next Friday we are having a poetry recital. We are doing one to two poems each. Addis is doing Jabberwocky. I am doing Take Me Out of The Bathtub. Eden is doing two: Stinky, Stinky Diaper Change and Go Go Go to Bed. Colby is doing Tractor. Noah is doing Hug O’War and Colors. Cian’s doing Anteater. Cole’s doing I’m Filthy, I’m Dirty, and Kelley is doing ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. If you’ve heard of these before that’s ok, you get to hear it again. If not, you’re in for a treat. We started practicing in front of each other. We’ve all been working hard and have improved a lot. I think we’re going to do great!”-Zooey

“We are reading Mr.Popper’s penguins in school at quiet time to be quiet and hear a story. Alley reads it to us.”-Gabriel

“On Monday, we worked on writing paragraphs. Sarah had a “paragraph hamburger” that gave us a basic idea of what a paragraph format looked like. She also showed us an example of a paragraph (her family going to the supermarket). Example of a paragraph format: topic sentence, body (details # 1, 2, 3, etc), and…conclusion!! I’d like to conclude this story so, goodbye. Thanks!”-Addis

“The owls nest used the work bench every work time because it was fun. I made a blaster.”-Caleb

“This week it was cold but it did not stop us from playing soccer. Warm clothes were needed. We got the ball stuck in the tree. We tried to get it with a pole. It was so fun!!”-Colby

“Me and Sarah made origami”-Hazel

“This week we played a lot of soccer. On Monday we were playing and someone punted the ball…boom! It got stuck in the tree. Here, let me give you some background. I think we were just 10 minutes in and it happened. First, we got a pole and just used it as a javelin and threw it at the ball (not a smart idea). When that didn’t work, we threw rocks. That also didn’t work. So, we got on Sarah’s back and shoulders. Then we had to back Alley’s truck to stand on. Addis got back on Sarah’s shoulders to then get the ball. That’s it folks! Thanks for reading Soccer Ball Gets Stuck in Tree.”-Noah

“I made trails in the woods.”-Ryder

“On Tuesday we had Tiggy Tuesday. Tig is Sarah’s dog, and he is really fun and cute. He was a rescue and when we leave he thinks that we will abandon him, so he is really anxious when we leave. He really likes catching his toys, and knows that if you put his toys down then you’re done. Tig knows a lot of commands and he knows words, so if we say “squirrel” or “out” then he gets anxious. All in all I think Tig is a great dog and I can’t wait for him to come again.”-Eden

“Tigger visited on Wednesday at school so he can be a part of the community.”-Abby

“This week in Carpentry we worked on bird houses. Grandpop brought in bird houses that we sanded. We did not get finished because sanding takes a long time. Sanding makes the bird house splinter proof. We might complete our bird houses next week.”-Cole

“We made bird house at carpentry for fun. We painted them.”-Emma

“This week we painted and decorated our writing journal covers. I painted mine with volcanoes, mountains and mossy brick, and I painted the sky purple. We chose something that inspired us. I chose mine because I like all that stuff. I traced my outline and started painting with acrylic paint. I think it turned out great and I hope we do it with our other journals.”-Kelley

“The owls got a puppet theater today in dramatic play to put on a show. Kat got it for us.”-Matilda (Thank you Kat!)

“I saw Maeve getting in people’s faces on Thursday at school because she was kissing us by licking.”-Charlie
